Complex, dense, and layered on the palate, it reveals plenty of structure mandating 6-8 years of cellaring. The wine has all the right stuff and is in balance, so patience is likely to be rewarded. It gives up a compelling nose of black cherry fruit that jumps from the glass along with earth and mineral notes. Plush on the palate bordering on voluptuous, this pleasure-bent, full-flavored effort will drink well for another 3-4 years although few will be able to resist its charms for that long. Dry and savory on the palate, it will drink nicely for 3-4 years, is an outstanding value, and a terrific introduction to the Mencia grape. The current Telmo Rodriguez collection includes wines produced in eight different DOs, all of them fermented with native yeasts. Kaum hatte die Familie Eguren ihr Weingut Numanthia im Jahre 2007 an die Gruppe LVMH verkauft, erwarb sie - gleichwohl in der D.O. TORO - herausragende Parzellen in den Gebieten Zamora, Valdefinjas und Villabuena. Die Rebparzellen liegen auf einer Höhe von 650-800m ü. M. und dies auf vorwiegend sandigem Boden. Alle Rebberge sind mit der Tinta de Toro – eine mit der Tempranillo verwandte Rebsorte – bepflanzt. Dabei sind die jüngsten Reben bereits 15-60 Jahre alt und werden für den Almirez verwendet; aus den Rebstöcken mit ihren 60-100 Jahren werden die beiden Exklusivitäten Victorino und Alabaster gewonnen. Die Familie Eguren führt mit einer bezeichnenden Konsequenz ihr Tradition der Sorgfalt und Qualität weiter. Das Traubengut wird ausschliesslich handverlesen und in kleinen Boxen gesammelt um ein erstes Zerquetschen zu vermeiden. Gereift wird in französischer Eiche. Die Resultate lassen nicht zu wünschen übrig und werden unter dem Namen Teso la Monja produziert und vertrieben. Almirez - Die jüngsten Reben des Weingutes welche bereits 15-60 Jahre alt sind werden für den ALMIREZ verwendet. Die Erträge liegen bei 20hl/ha aus den Rebbergen mit 15-30-jährigen Stöcken. 12-monatige Reifung in französischer Eiche, davon 30% neue Fässer. Der ALMIREZ ist ein blumiger, frischer Wein. Noten von Rosen, Viola und blauen Beeren. Am Gaumen Graphit, Kaffeenote und Sauerkrische. Angenehm seidig und ausgewogene Tannine. Ein erstaunliches Preis- Qualitätsverhältnis. Jetzt trinkreif (2-3 Stunden vorher atmen lassen), kann aber noch zulegen. The Wine Advocate: The 2008 Almirez went through malolactic in barrel followed by 12 months in French oak. The Wine Advocate: The 2005 Dinastia Vivanco Reserva is a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano aged in 50% new French and American oak for 24 months. Pain grille, pencil lead, Asian spices, incense, lavender, and blackberry aromas are followed by a savory, incipiently complex, structured Reserva made in a traditional Rioja style. Give it 1-2 years of additional cellaring and drink it through 2020, perhaps longer. Bodega Dinastia Vivanco is a must visit for wine tourists. The winery is designed to be accessible to visitors but the principal attraction is the finest wine museum I have ever seen. Called Museo de la Cultura del Vino, it is beautifully designed and filled to the brim with artifacts from all aspects of wine from farming to drinking. As for the wines, Dinastia Vivanco has been flying under the radar screen but with a new importer on board, it is highly likely that their wine will receive greater exposure. Dense, rich, and layered on the palate, this well-balanced, lengthy offering is an outstanding value that over-delivers in a big way. Bodegas Vizcarra Ramos is staking a claim as one of the finest estates in Ribera del Duero. As a postscript, the importer presented the 2008 Ines Vizcarra and the 2008 Celia Vizcarra which were previously reviewed in my Focus on Ribera del Duero report in 2010.
