with a long finish.
Terraprima launched her first wines in 2010:
Some 5 years ago, Carlos Esteva, owner of the
renowned Can Ràfols dels Caus Estate, had to fight
against plans for a mining project in the valley next to
his Estate. The mining activities would have had a
negative impact on the growing conditions in his
vineyards and would have destroyed the unique
landscape next to the Estate and the protected
Garraf National Park.
Carlos saved the valley from
destruction, but was then obliged to take over the
land from the mining company. He started to take care
of the 45 ha. of existing vineyards and adapted his winery
to receive and vinify the new grapes.
The composition of the soil of this rocky valley makes it
possible to produce fresh, mineral wines, which are
unique for Spain. After the successful creation of Mas
Oller in the Empordà, Carlos teamed up once more with
Peter Schoonbrood and wine maker Anna Baqués to
create modern and innovative wines from the grapes.
TerraPrima, the name given to the wines, reflects the
uniqueness of the land…
The Wine Advocate:
The red wines begin with the 2007 Terraprima Red, a blend of 60% Cabernet Franc, 30% Garnacha, and 10% Syrah aged for 12 months in seasoned French oak. Fresh herbs, olives, cherry, and raspberry aromas inform the nose of this racy red. A bit of structure suggests that this nicely proportioned wine will evolve for 1-2 years and drink well for 5-6. It is an outstanding value.
Can Rafols Dels Caus is the 450 hectare property of the brilliantly creative Carlos Esteva.
